mod_rewrite .htaccess problem

Hi,

System: Windows 2000 Server with Apache 1.3.33 PHP 4.4.0

I added a .htaccess file to one of my subdirectories with a mod_rewrite rule which worked perfectly.
I then deleted the file .htaccess, re-tested the page and the rule was still working!
I have subsequently rebooted the server twice, done a search of the entire hard disk for the .htaccess incase I did not delete it. I cannot find it.

I have no tried adding a new .htaccess file to the same directory with a different rule. But that rule does not work and the old one still takes effect.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thanks
Andrew

Have you checked the website configuration file to see if Overrides are allowed?  Is there a rule in the httpd.conf file that is taking precedence?
