"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Of course its possible.  In fact, I never make ERDs any more.  I just do system state backups.  The old ERD was little more than a registry backup.  So if you backup your registry, you can try to recover.  In fact, with 2000 the ERD would only make a backup copy of the registry in the C:\WINNT\REPAIR folder.  Only catch is, you can't use the automated process that's a part of the Windows Setup when you boot.

How do i go ahead without an ERD ?

I'm trying to do a Fast repair, but it asks for the ERD, and when i tell them to press L for windows to locate the files, it doesn't work, and asks for the ERD again.

I cant get into the system via safe mode or normally

What happens?  What kind of error when you try to boot normally?

I usually boot to a BartPE CD and rename the existing file that it claims is no longer working, copying the backup version from C:\WINNT\REPAIR.

Note: if you have a driver issue, an ERD wouldn't help anyway, but you can use the BartPE CD to rename the problem driver so it doesn't load and try booting again.

(Most of this can be done through the recovery console, but the reovery console is VERY limited in its functionality and I tend to avoid it if possible).

BartPE - available from:

Then be sure to get BOTH the driver add on and the software add on from:

the error when they boot normally is a corrupt winnt\system32\config\System.ced file

Ok, downlaoded a windows boot disk onto 4 floppy disks and booted from there to reinstall windows
Lee W, MVPTechnology and Business Process AdvisorCommented:
So you didn't like the BartPE solution?  Was the CD bootable?
LFC1980Author Commented:
Didn't try that as the floppy did the job.
