Hello, what is the easiest way to lockout a user and then display a message when the user tries to login?

I built a simple tool that admins can update the isLockedOut field of the aspnet_membership table which effectively lockes out the user. But am having dificulties tying to get the login control to display the message due to this type of logout. Any ideas on the best method to accomplish this task?
