SBS and MS CRM 3.0 HELP! Keep getting this error...

I did a fresh install of SBS Premium using the URL 'support.abcsystems.com'.
I used the Advanced Technologies disk to replace the ms SQL desktop version of SQL with SQL 2000 and updated it with SP4 from the same disk.
I then used the same disk to do a full install of SQL 2000 with 'Windows Authentication' using the 'Local System Account' and updated it with SP4 from the same disk.
I did Not install ISA Server yet.

When I try to Install MS CRM 3.0, it installs up to the point where it tries to start the SQL Reporting Service and it fails with the message...

Specified Reporting Services Report Server URL https://support.abc-systems.com/ReportServer cannot be resolved into IP. The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found.

I cant for the life of me figure out what is going wrong. When I look in DNS record there is no A record entry for 'support'. Even though I installed SBS with that prefix. I even added it but the CRM install produces the same message. Also I don't think its ISA related because I havent' installed it and I don't see an entry in the Default web site for 217.1.1.1 or whatever.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you clarify what you mean by "using the URL 'support.abcsystems.com'??

If this is a new server, you are creating a NEW DOMAIN and your internal domain should really NOT be a .com, but something like a .local.  Otherwise you will have to do a lot of custom DNS configuration later on.

And if there is no A record in DNS... did you complete the To-Do list part of the installation?

One other thing that you said is sticking out...
"I used the Advanced Technologies disk to replace the ms SQL desktop version of SQL with SQL 2000"

Did you do this to the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING instance??? Because that is not gonna work!

Thanks for your reply!

I installed my domain as the default 'mybusinessname.local'
When it comes to running the 'Connect to the internet' wizzard from the 'To Do' list it asks for the domain of my company website such as 'www.microsoft.com' so I enter the url that I want our company website to be which is not 'mybusinessname.com' but 'www.alternatename.com', can I do that? or does it have to be the same name that i used for 'mybusinessname.local' and my AD Domain name?

in the 'To Do....Connect to the Internet' wizzard, the first time I entered 'support.alternatename.com' and later after the wizzard was done I looked in DNS and there was no 'support' entry/A record. So I was assuming the error has something to do with the connection using the certificate that was generated when I ran the 'connect to internet' wizzard somehow because the error says
'Specified Reporting Services Report Server URL https://support.abc-systems.com/ReportServer cannot be resolved into IP'
but I'm not sure.

I did not update the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING only the SHAREPOINT instance.

I've now re-installed and I'm at the point where its asking me to turn on the Firewall (or not) and asking which applications I want to expose to the internet using a direct connection. I selected 'ALL' ... and when I click next, it says 'you are exposing the directory structure of your website to the internet are you sure'...Is that ok or should I select all except the website.

Also the next few screens ask for a domain name of my company website...can I do www.alternatename.com or do I have to put in www.mybusinessname.com using the same name as my 'mybusinessname.local' ?

>> " want our company website to be which is not 'mybusinessname.com' but 'www.alternatename.com', can I do that? "
Sure!  There is really no problem with having a completely separate internal domain than your external one.  In fact, it's preferable.  FYI, mybusinessname.com and mybusinessname.local are completely separate domain spaces in much the same way that alternatename.com would be.   However... you can't use the www in this part of the wizard.

Which is a good segue to your next paragraph,

>>>"I entered 'support.alternatename.com' "
SBS does not support the use of subdomains -- whether it's "www" or "support" they would be considered a child domain in the Active Directory Structure and that's not allowed on SBS.  But I know that's not what you are trying to accomplish here.

First, realize that the DNS on your SBS is not authoritative for alternatename.com.  This means that if you want to have an A record for support.alternatename.com be seen by the Internet, that entry must be put in alternatename.com's zone file wherever it is authoritative for the domain (your ISP, web host, registrar or other DNS service) pointing to the EXTERNAL PUBLIC IP address of your server.

So, in the CEICW (Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard) when you are asked for the external domain, you only want two segments in that name, ie, alternatename.com.  (Your server's INTERNAL FQDN will be servername.mybusinessname.local, by the way).  But you can create as many FQDN's as you want that point to your server.  Such as service.alternatename.com, login.alternatename.com, etc...   IIS will handle these different FQDN's with the Host Header configuration (http://www.visualwin.com/host-header/) and send each different request to the appropriate directory.

Now we can get to the point where you are at...

You should NOT open port 80 (website).  You will most likely want all of your connections to this server to be secure, so keeping that unchecked will force a secure connection.  The next screen, is the webserver certificate which should be entered as support.abcsystems.com assuming that the hostname of your server is "support".  If you aren't sure what you called your server initially, open a command prompt and type "HOSTNAME" and enter.  That will give you the hostname.

You must then make sure that support.abcsystems.com is registered with an A record in the PUBLIC DNS zone file for abcsystems.com.  If you decide later that you want the url to be something entirely different, you just need to enter another A record in the PUBLIC DNS (at your ISP) for the FQDN you want to use and then configure a HOST HEADER on your server.

Finish all other items on your To-Do list before attempting the CRM install.  You need to make sure that Sharepoint, Exchange, Monitoring, Backup, Fax, and all other services are fully operational and working correctly. Make sure you have installed Service Pack 1 and ALL security updates prior to installing CRM.

Then, install Reporting Services separately BEFORE installing CRM.  This will ensure that you get a better installation.
Read through all of the issues in the lates CRM Readme though, so you can be prepared:  http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/7/3/173f293a-b10a-4374-b1f1-e6ecdec07cfa/Readme.doc#CRM

You may also want to review this blog post which is a good review of his personal install experiences:

I am at the point where it asks to create a new Web Server Certificate.
For the 'Web server name' do I put abcsystems.com or hostname.abcsystems.com?

I believe that I stated what you should do on that screen in the following paragraph.
