Microsoft Defender won't update

I recently removed Microsoft Antispyware and installed Microsoft Defender Beta.  It worked great until automatic updates ran.  Now I am getting error 0x8204400a (along with many others) when I attempt to update it.  Any suggestions?  I am running XP with SP2 and Norton Corporate Edition Anti Virus.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Perhaps the "new" updates are using old data. Have you cleared your Temp and IE temporary files?

Try running the command below from Start > Run

Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

This will uninstall the Windows Defender Signatures and hopefully allow you to update again.

Good luck,

Nothing worked.  I went to Microsoft update this morning and they had an update for windows installer 3.1.  I guess they got wind of the problem and wrote the patch.  Anyway, it's working now.  Thanks for the comments!

That is OK, but you must have been away from windows Update for a long time...

Nothing new for my system.

I don't think ANY updates were happening - I have automatic updates turned on.

Yes, that may be the reason for missing that one.

Anyway, really glad you solved it.
