Are there any simple applications out there to determine what type and speed memory a computer has?

You should use a diagnostic application of some sort like ADID32 (I believe Everest is based off of this).

try it and see if it works for you.
There are also some other options such as SiSandra and Everest which are just as useful (and possibly more up to date).
