"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Dual core systems will allow you to run more programs at the same time because they effectively have 2 CPUs.  SOME programs will more directly benefit from Dual Core CPUs, others will not - it depends if the application is multithreaded or not.  If it is, then the program might want or need to do more than one thing at a time, in which case, Dual Core will benefit you.  If it wants to run linearly, then the program won't directly benefit, other than having the OS allow you to run more programs at the same time.

Leew is correct.

Adding to that:
It's very hard to say what software supports this because most software venders don't tell you if the program is multithread capable or not.
- You basically have to ask them...

Dual core CPUs are not dual CPU system.
Dual core divides the work up and thus runs faster and can be used on existing software.

Dual CPU will only work if the program is specifically designed for two CPUs.

gonzal13 - your link contradicts your earlier statement:

Re: Dual Core - "This term refers to integrated circuit (IC) chips that contain two complete physical computer processors (cores) in the same IC package."

This IS a DUAL CPU system.
