linux KDE crashed

I had my computer crash on me not to long ago and KDE will not start up.  I get to the login but after that it freezes.  How do I repair KDE?  I'm not very good with Linux so be very elementary with the answer.  I'm on the Knoppix distro.

First check your HD for how much space there is on it. If you have plenty of it, run apt-get update to update the software repositary (you need a working internet connection for that to work), then run apt-get upgrade, this should upgrade your system and also repair anything that doesn't work. This upgrade can take some time...
To get out of the hang, you may have to kill the graphics server (X server?) by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. If all is OK, you should be able to get a command line interface, from which you can run the utilities mentioned above.
