"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Pick according to your installed distro...

rpm -qa       <- will list installed package names on a RPM-based distribution.,
                         such as Redhat, Mandriva, SuSE, old Caldera, ...

dpkg -l         <- will list installed packages names on a DEB-based distribution;
                        such as Debian or Ubuntu

To query the list of installed packages on Gentoo, you need a tool not installed by default...

  emerge gentoolkit

And
  qpkg -I

In slackware
 ls -l /var/log/packages

IMO, the question was fairly simple and thoroughly answered, for all common cases.

I suggest Split or PAQ/No-refund.
