I often facve a problem that some times a disk capacity grows and some times decrease abruptly. Some times in users are which is understandable and sometimes on system partition like it happneed on /var on one of my system today.

Apart from system auditing is there any simpler way to record what is happening on system or atleast to trace the usage of disk.

This may be a bit of overkill for what you are wanting to do, but it will keep a log of the disk usage, down time and such.  It will also page, or email you when disks usage starts to climb above your presets.
