Hi Experts,

I have had one on my domain controllers fail on me....

But I have on up but i am getting some errors which I need help with.

I think I have a problem with DNS.
Here is my config.

Server1 ip address 172.40.1.1 I have the network card set dns set to 172.40.1.1
The Domain is called Compauth.

I can get to the sysvol directory by doing \\compauth.local\sysvol.
when I ping compauth.local I get a reply back from 172.40.1.70 which is the failed server...
None of my clients can log on to the networK compauth Domain..
here are my DNS Settings.

Hi plunkettjames,

when you say your domain controller has died on you - is it completely gone and are you planning on bringing it back

you need to look at where the FSMO roles were held and will need to seize them onto the other DC
http://www.petri.co.il/seizing_fsmo_roles.htm
remember if you seize FSMO roles, you can never bring that old DC back without formatting the box and starting again

before we look at any DNS issues we need to sort the FSMO roles out..... let me know where you are at with this ad we'll go from there

Cheers!

thanks for the quick reply,

I was not clear in my msg, Just in a bit of a tissy about this....

When I installed caserver1 I set it up for dns and dhcp and it was a gobal catalog. and all was fine.  I then set up a another PDC as backup caserver2,  and all was fine..

My Caserver 1 seems fine,  I can access AD
When I ping Compauth.local it replys with the address 172.40.1.3,  should it not reply with the address 172.40.1.1 caserver1

?
Caserver2 is dead ,  Should I Power it of.. or leave it on,  I can ping the ip address,  but errors are coming up all over the place...and dns will not open nor will the Domain security console open. I can not run DCpromo on it either....

So I have i DC running, but my client can not ping it.  and this error keeps coming up on clients..
"Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects. Check the event log for possible messages previously logged by the policy engine that describes the reason for this."

Non of my client can ping compauth.local?

Again Help....

plunkettjames,

if your additional server is dead then yes turn it off - i am wondering why you write it off and call it dead so quickly though  -  what happened to it?

you need to flush your dns cache on the server

ipconfig /flushdns

also check your SOA records under the dns servers properties and make sure it is pointing to your alive domain controller

if you are not intending on repairing that DC straight away, remove its host record from DNS

then reregister DNS   ipconfig /register dns

then run DCDIAG and see what it has to say

Well I do not want to write it off but I thougf that If i could get the network back,  then I would be ok so i want to try and concentrate on one server. Caserver1,  as this server is my file and print.

I also did a stupied thing I uninstalled dns on caserver2,\
But  I reinstalled and set it to forward requests to caserver1, Was this a good idea reinstalling it?

plunkettjames,

i think at the moment if you want to get your network up and running fast then you need to turn off that second DC completely

the only big errors that DCDIAG is showing is your replication errors as it cant find your second DC

before i continue with the next steps with you, are you planning on repairing your second DC or will you be happy to resinstall the OS and promote it again as a secondary DC later on?

Jay,  I just want to get up and running,

I dont think i will use the caserver2 again,  there was nothing on the server anyway,  My main server is caserver1,  which runs all my companys files,  So even if i can get that up and running.  I would be really happy..

alright then not a problem

if you are not able to run dcpromo /forceremoval on the second DC then turn it off and remove it from the network

next follow the steps in this link - you are going to have to use the ntdsutil tool to remove the machine from active directory completly
http://www.petri.co.il/delete_failed_dcs_from_ad.htm

now there is still a bug with ntdsutil that often leaves the machine record sitting in AD sites and services of which you manually need to delete or DCDIAG will kick up errors again

also you need to triple check that you dont have any entries in DNS that relates to your old server - you will have to manually delete them and also double check your SOA record is pointing to your DC1

after you have run the tool and cleaned your metadata - restart your Domain Controller and run the diags again

let me know

thats cool man i have been in the same spot.

as you had to forcefully remove the dc, you should still run through the link above with the ntdsutil

follow the steps i posted above as well :)

Jay I did the metadata remove.
And i removed the a host records for caserver2.
I just ran DC Diag and the results are below,

I am getting an error in Event viewer,
The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization.
and also
The PrintQueue Container could not be found because the DNS Domain name could not be retrieved.  Error: 54b
When I now ping the domain compauth.local is is replying 172.40.1.1 which is the Caserver1

I am not sure if my soa record is fine,  here is a dns report.

Should i remove the entries (same as parent folder) that corraspond with 172.40.1.70 old server?

looking much healthier now!

i would remove ANYTHING relating to the old server especially those DNS entries as they can sit there and raise havoc in the future  deleting them is ok

was DHCP installed on your first DC or the one that died? also you will have to reconfigure any scopt options that deal out DNS to the clients - make sure the old one is gone. you may need to recreate and reauthorize the scope if it is giving you errors

thats a pleasure mate im glad you are backup and running.

it is a very good idea to bring a second DC up as a secondary but i think you should reinstall the OS first just to be on the safe side of things :)

all the best mate let me know if i can help you again
