Why is "this is a width test-- please tell me it works" split up into two lines in IE? I want IE to show "..." when the size of the column is not big enough...

<table style="table-layout:fixed;" width=400 id="data">
<tr>
<td valign=top width=50 style="text-overflow:ellipsis;overflow:hidden;white-space:nowrap;">this is a width test-- please tell me it works</td>
<td valign=top width=50 style="text-overflow:ellipsis;overflow:hidden;white-space:nowrap;">this is a width test-- please tell me it works</td>
<td valign=top width=300 style="text-overflow:ellipsis;overflow:hidden;white-space:nowrap;">this is a width test-- please tell me it works</td>
</tr>
</table>

Looks like text-overflow does not apply to TD elements (at least in IE).

You can place a <div style="width:50px;overflow:hidden;white-space:nowrap;text-overflow:ellipsis;"> inside the td. Then, the div tag is taking care of the text overflow.

Yes, but  that means a LOT of div's when the table is big...
