Connecting to remote samba machine

I have a plesk server hosted at a remote location, and I've enabled Samba file services.

How can I connect to this machine's shares from a remote location on a Windows XP workstation?  Do I have to configure VPN and tunnel in?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

yeah, setting up a vpn is the best route if you need to be able to access files off that remote computer...

another option is to use a remote desktop type connection. has a free remote desktop app that works great, easy to setup through firewalls, etc..
the pro version has a file sync option as well.

"file sync" should be "file manager" :)

Well the system is a fedora core 3 server with plesk.  I need to setup the VPN to access the samba server, or can I just use the public IP address?
it would be better to setup vpn as straight access to the public IP would not be encrypted and secure.
