I've messed up my DNS somehow.  I can still access sites by IP address, but not name.  'dig' for instance says ';; connection timed out; no servers could be reached'

my /etc/resolv.conf has

my /etc/rc.conf has

ifconfig_xl0="inet  netmask" ipv6_enable="YES"

The problem started after installing tomcat 5.5 ...

    Accepted Solution

    1) Do you really need  ipv6_enable="YES" ? If not, please disable.
    2) defaultrouter and hostname should be on different lines.

    This server: works fine, I've just checked. Even for recursive lookups.

    My suggestions are:
    1) Check: /etc/nsswitch.conf
    hosts: files dns
    2) Check your firewall rules:
    if it doesn't work - it's a network problem
