SBS2003 Licensing

HI there, I have a client that has an SBS2003 server and they have gone over their Installed licenses. They have purhcased 20 licenses and are shooting over this. Before they purchase more licenses they want to make sure that all their licenses match up with the number of machines. Is there any way i can tell what is using each of the licenses, i need to make sure that athey are using the amount of licenses that server manager is reporting. I would appreciate some help with clearing up this issue.

SBS2003 offers both USER and DEVICE CALs.  So it would be important to know which you already have and which you are wanting to purchase.

There is no EXACT method, however, of determining which CALs are being used by which user or device.  It's a bit fuzzy and the requirement is to just have ENOUGH.  You can see how many have been used by looking at the licensing pane in the Server Management Console.

If you want to review a good guide about SBS licensing, please see this excerpt from Harry Brelsford's Advanced Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices:
