Virus Scanner Amavisd will Start but won't stay Started!!!

Ok here's is my issue, I'm trying to install a spam filter.
I am running CentOS 4.1 and have installed Postfix, Amavisd and Spamassassin.
Each program runs except for Amavis it seems. I had the most impossible time getting Amavis to start.
But after it's started it doesn't show that it's running in the processes. So I stopped it and recieved this error

[root@spam-relay amavis]# ./ start
Starting amavisd:                                          [  OK  ]

[root@spam-relay amavis]# ./ stop
Shutting down amavisd: No PID file /var/amavis/, can't stop the process

Is it something I did wrong while setting up Amavisd. It might be my config file. If you guys need to see it I can copy it over.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

try starting it again and quick look in the logs for entries pertaining to amavis.  You should be able to see something in there what the process is dying shortly after being started.
> No PID file /var/amavis/, can't stop the process
pid files are unreliable

please check with ps if amavis is running, if so you need to fix your for both the start and the stop case
