Sizing Question installing several installations of SAP on vmware environments

I need to buy a server for development and testing. I need to run between four and six Virtual Machines at the same time. The Host server will run Windows 2003 Server. The guest OS machines will be also Windows 2003 Server. Nobody will be working on the host and there will be two to four users maximum working on each Virtual Machine. Each Virtual Machine will be running SAP on Oracle.

Any suggestions about the size of the server?

Thanks in advance for your help,

We have a similar situation where several servers are virtualised on the same IBM hardware.

You should get good support from the vendors of enterprise-class hardware, who work closely with clients on sizing issues.

Essentially you will need to work out the number of "SAPS" using the SAP Quick-Sizer mechanism.  Then add the overheads associated with management of the OS partitions.  Do a user-based sizing and a disk-sizing based on anticipated loads.  The sum of these efforts should give you a fair idea of the hardware requirement.

Generally certain upgrade margins are built into the server so that additional processors can be activated on demand and disk space increased.
