Storage management

I am putting together a storage management plan that will archive data after a period of time in order to free disk space on our servers.  So I am here to ask a question to others smarter than me.  I want to be able to run a report or backup job that reports or removes all files after a period of time.  Here is my issue... I have several apps that run against the file server that report on various file statistics.  I have noticed that all my files on the server have recent Date Accessed file attributes.  I suspect either the backup app or one of the other apps is resetting the Date Access attribute.  So, what are my options to remove old files?  I was going to pruge based on the Date Accessed attribute, but that apprears to be a lost cause now.  Any suggestions?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
