Mail Returned as Undeliverable -- #5.5.0 smtp;550 recipient rejected

I have Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003 as the mail client -- one of my users sent out an e-mail and it was returned as undeliverable with the following message:

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.< #5.5.0 smtp;550  recipient rejected

I'm not sure why this was returned - any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

please confirm the correct address of the recepient
The message means what it says.

The server that the message was sent to rejected the recipient. This could be a bad address, bad configuration etc.

My instinct says that there may be some kind of restriction on that recipient, if the address was wrong, then I would expect "User Unknown" type message to come back.

Almost certainly not a problem at your end, the sender needs to contact the recipient and see what the problem is there.

Thanks for the assistance.  I was hoping it was not a problem with my server and I think you agree.  We are checking into the accuracy of the e-mail address the user is sending to but are pretty certain it is correct.
