Sound problems with REaltek ac97 audio

Was having problems with the audio being driven by Realtek AC97 audio.  The sound was very low.  So we uninstalled the drivers and reloaded them from the Vendor's CD.  The installed appeard ok but in Device manager there is an yellow excalmation mark by the entry:

! Microsoft winmm wdm audion compatibility driver.

Furthermore, when I try to open up the Volume control Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, volume, I get the message "There are no active mixers available.  to install....."

Can anyone shed some light on the problems?

wat you can do is try uninstalling the drivers and try reinstalling the same i think with this it should work fine. You can also do one more thing goto device manager click on the icon that shows yellow mark, try doing update driver and check the proper location in the vendors cd, i thnk you are using windows 98 Se. There would be the rite driver for it.

Best regards
Try downloading the most recent driver from:

This is the official Realtek Website (manufacturer of the AC97 Codec.  This should fix your problem.

Is it on board audio? Then what motherboard do you have ? Download the proper drivers at the manufacturers site, or post the model here. if you don't know, use Everest to identify it :

the sound is onboard and the vendor has a cd that came with the system to reload the correct ac97 drivers. the Vendor cd  allows selective restores (of system components).  I first uninstalled the ac97 drivers.  Then, I did the restore for the ac97 drivers (from the vendor cd) and they restored ok.  But I dont think the  " ! Microsoft winmm wdm audio compatibility driver"  (yellow exclamation point )message is something that would be on his cd is it?

In other words, where do I get the Microsoft winmm wdm audio driver?  ( I am guessing that is what it needs).

read my post, and tell us what mobo you have please. . .
