Watch Question

do you have NIS enabled?

hi,
We are using SAMBA to enable printing to Windows from AIX. Basically I am a Oracle DBAand have no Clue about NIS. When I check in 'smitty' subsystems it sohws me nispasswdd as active but  rpc.nisd and rpc.nis_cachemgr as inoperative. what are the consequences if i stop nispasswdd subsystem. Why would i need it on a DB server.

you have to ask the admin ;-)

NIS maintains some basic UNIX files (most likely passwd, group, hosts, and whatelse is configured for NIS) using a central NIS-server. i.g. a database does not use it 'cause it has its own authentication schema.

check your Samab configuration, /etc/samba/smb.conf usually, if it relies on NIS
