IMAP client connection problem

I have a SBS Standard 2003 Server running exchange 2003.  I have configured IMAP on the server for use with t-mobile MDA compact phones so users can access their emails while out visiting clients.  some users are able to connect through to the server and collect mails using IMAP and some can't.  I have searched through this site and so far found the only solution is to delete the user and recreate, I have quite a few users and this would be last resort.  If i create a new user then the IMAP works fine, the users that are working currently are recently added users after i activated the IMAP service.  This is very urgent!!!

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This depends on the settings on the user.

For instance if a user is migrated from an NT4 enviroment to a Windows 2003 enviroment.
This user will be able to login with:
USERNAME
PASSWORD

If an user was created in an Windows 2003 enviroment.
This user will be able to login with:
USERNAME@FQDM (e.g. username@domain.local)
PASSWORD

The diference between the users is visible in the user properties tab:account username the field behind it empty or is filled with FQDN.

Could you try logging those users in with USERNAME@FQDM

If this doesn't work get back to us.

Also check if the user has IMAP enabled.

You can do this from the active directory rightclick a user, Exchange Tasks -> Configure Exchange Features and make sure that IMAP is enabled for that user.

You can change this setting on multiple users by selecting all those users and do the same action.

Hi Maasdriel, thanks for your speedy reply.

This was a new installation of SBS Server 2003 back in november last year.  Their was no migration involved. I have tried to connect with both types of username and they still get rejected by the server with the following error:

The server has rejected your login. Please verify that your user name password are correct.

I have also checked the user settings and IMAP is configured for use with all users.

Tony

Hi Dushan,

The firewall is working fine because we can get some clients to access and not others.

Sometimes we have problems connecting via IMAP is the Mailbox rights somehow are wrong.
In the properties of the user account, on the tab Exchange Advanced, you have the button Mailbox rights. Try to compare a user, where everything is fine with a user which has problems.
My experience is that sometimes you have to add the user and give it "Read permissions" and "Full mailbox access".

Hi Maasdriel,

I have now completed this problem using active sync with exchange, I was not aware of the capabilities of Active sync, but customer is now very happy with the way the setup is working.  Thanks for all you help, although I have still not managed to work out why the IMAP is not working.

I am happy to give you some points for your efforts.
