Struggling with a jump to bookmark command using javascript on page onload

I am sure this extremely simple, however I can't get it to work:

I have a variable that may or may not be populated.

If it is populated, I want an onload event in the <body> tag to jump down the page to a bookmark.

I have tried: <body onload="window.location.href=#bookmark"> but to no avail - I am sure I am missing something really simple!

Thanks for your help.
