0kb Files = Students Loosing Work | Flrd Rediretion Failure? Offline Files?

I have over 200 students. Each has an account. Some students are loosing files in a peculiar way. The file exists but its empty essentially it is a 0 kb file. The set of students loosing files is very small. Basically the problem is random and affecting students of different classes.

System Information:

2      Windows 2000 servers
      1 Domain Controller
      1 File Server

80       Desktops (HPs)
      100mb LAN connections

32      Laptops
      802.11 G/B Depending on Classroom

15      Desktops (Gateways)
      100mb LAN connections

Student Account Information:

1      All student accounts are created by VB.NET Program I wrote which interfaces       with our administrative database.
2      All accounts are created equal.
3      All accounts get a student share folder in the file server.
4      All folder permissions are set by the program and are created equally.
5      Folder redirection of the “My Documents” Folder and “Desktop” Folders are set       by Group Policy
6      Student Login Script assigned by group policy maps student share folder to “S:”       on all accounts.
7      Group Policy Enables Offline files on laptops due to intermittent nature of       wireless connections

Notes:

Could The Offline Files be creating local cache copies that get interrupted and result in 0kb files which then have a newer time stamp than server copies and upon reconnecting replace originals??

Could Folder Redirection Lead to 0kb Files in some way???

I have reprogrammed both Desktop labs and am in process of reprogramming laptops from clean master images. But problem persists.

Upgrading to 500 pts

Speed is not as important as thoroughness

Keep in mind I work school hours so ill be reading
From 8:00am – 4:30pm EST on School days only
(Weekends I relax, and trust me I need it)

Sorry, EST means nothing to me. Is this an 'American' thing?

Is there any logical grouping of the students that are having issues?
Can you exclude certain users from the local cache (offline) folders?

Yes. It is possible that the offline-folders can cause some funnies. In effect, the object is created (the file name and its pointer in the file system) but data does not get copied leaving a zero-byte entry. I will have to try and find the technet entry for this as it is something that I have read historically rather than something to hand.

sure. but are all issues revolving around wireless users or a mix of all types?
Can you exclude some 'test' users from the offline folders by removing them from the group policy or creating a seperate group and denying the offline folders policy?

Separate note: giving time followed by the 3 letter time zone is an international standard I thought like the comments and questions get on their time stamps.

Perhaps this week end when i will be reprogramming the laptops (they must be done manualy because of wireless tech lacking a network boot capability) can can separate a few for testing but not in any imeadiate fashion.

Ok I have started creating a laptop master image that bypasses folder redirection and offline files. Which uses a local open account locked by registry and protected by MS public computer toolkit allowing the students to access their files by a logon script that maps their student drives. I’ll be following the new configuration closely hopefully its effective. If it works ill implement it school wide. Folder redirection would probably work better in a corporate environment where they can afford to buy a homogenized network. Whilst we’re working with many different machines donated or purchased with donated funds over the years.

Ok I am feeling pretty confident about this new configuration, enough to close this question. I guess I just had to get off the idea of having to have all my computers joined to the domain. At least until I can upgrade my network cabling and switches to deal with the amount of bandwidth necessary to use domain assigned folder redirection and offline files. It is a bit of a let down since I spent almost a year trying to tweak out a solution only to have to junk the whole scheme and restructure.

Fingers crossed on some grants we applied for I need those gigabit switches pretty bad.
These kids’ projects are becoming so much more robust every year, with the pictures video and audio.

My Network is becoming obsolete before my very eyes.

Thanks. Don't be disheartened. We have a major upgrade every four years with minor ones every 12 months. With the speed of technology changes, everyone is in the same position as you to a greater or lesser degree.
