"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

DNS servers maintain a database of domain names = IP address and also a reverse lookup of IP = domain or host name

This is the best resource I have found to explain how DNS works;

I used when studyiing for MS exams.
simple version
forward DNS reverse, takes a dns name and maps it to a IP
reverse dns lookup takes a ip and provides a dns name.
