cisco 6509 catos - remove deleted file from flash

I'm trying to remove a file from flash and get this message Squeeze device flash failed (unknown device)

Is this a hardware failure or is there anything else i can try?

Yeah, I can imagine you'd want to get rid of CatOS 5.5.  :)

Have you tried saving the other image somewhere safe, then formating the flash, then copying it back?  Do you have another flash card you could swap in for troubleshooting purposes?

CatOS should be able to give you the options if you enter "squeeze ?"
Squeeze applys to a device so it should be

squeeze bootflash:
or
squeeze slot0:
