Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Investment bankers are persons who make guesses as to the current trends in the market.  An asset manager is someone who manages all the assets for a division or company.

Example of asset management work is to keep a detailed list of all computers, monitors, printers, fax machines etc a company owns or leases and where those assets currently are.

Example of an investment banker is someone who watches the markets and invests in stocks of a specific company hoping those stocks will gain in value over time.

Correction....in your context, an asset manager, compiles your assets (home, investments, etc) and manages them accordignly. He/she will recommend where to place the money, when to move it, when to remortgage, basically how to stay financially sound. An investment banker will take your disposable income and "gamble" by investing. A smart investment broker will diversify the funds to offer you low risk and try to get you returns in the 7-10% range (on a good year) Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can make more ( imade 18% by investing in global money markets, etc)

Investment bankers comes in 2 flavors: Private and Corporate.
Private - they take care of individuals with $$$
Corporate - takes care of the corporate $$$ that flows thru the financial institution.
Depending on the financial end that you deal with, these bankers takes a management fee to hook up investors with investment opportunities, or they take a broker's fee to provide worthwhile ventures with investment capital.

Asset managers can include protions of investment banking community but asset management usually can be interpreted in very broad terms.  An asset manager may be an entity that has real estate holdings.
