Hi,

Currently I'm trying to move our Project Central Server application from an old Windows 2000 server to a new Windows 2003 server.  I didn't got very far, as I ran into an Error 1722.  the event log lists the following error,

Product: Microsoft Project Central Server -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.  Action ConfigureIIS, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI14E.tmp, command: +E:\Program Files\ProjectCentral\

Is there a way to get around this issue.  I've been google'ing on this error and searched the error on EE and found this is occuring for a wide range of applications, all with a specific workaround.

Thanks,
Perre

First, try to disable your on-access virus scanner during the setup.

Hope it helps,

Michael

This helped 99% of my cases ...
How did you disable it? If its i.e. NAI/McAfee issue a

net stop McShield

on the command line to really stop the scanner...

Then copy the installation source to a local hard drive, do not install via network.

Do you call the MSI directly or the setup.exe? Anyway, start it from a command prompt and add a /lew+C:\Setup_Project.log to it, i.e.

setup.exe /lew+C:\Setup_Project.log

or

msiexec /i <msi-file>.msi /lew+C:\Setup_Project.log

This will create a log of the msi actions which mght help to pinpoint the problem. If unsure, post your log here.

That's what I did but it didn't help, I receive the same error.

I'm doing the installation from the cdrom, not over the nework.

If you copy/copied the source make sure you included all subdirs. Verify your copy is ok.

Next step now is to generate the log file, lets see if this gives a clue. In general this is a problematic error. Its caused by an external program/module the installer tries to execute and it has no idea why it fails....

Why do I need to copy the instllation files locally, when the original cdrom is in the cdrom player of the server?

If your CD drive is okay, then you don't need to copy.
But if everything else fails, put your CD in a different machine and copy the files via network to your server.

I tried to run the setup with the log file option but when running this with setup.exe, I had to chose for /iew insead of /lew.  When running with /iew, it gives the following message 'This installation package could not be opened.  Verify that the package exists and that you can access it'.

With the msiexec line, I typed
msiexec /i websvr.msi /lew+C:\Setup_Project.log     The it shows the windows installer options box but doesn't start the setup either...

Too bad that it seems to be impossible to get a log out of that thing. I have no idea why the standard MSI switch /lew fails.

The msiexec wrapper setup.exe also seems to ignore or misinterpret additional switches.
Does setup give command line help if called with setup /?
If there is a readable setup.ini you might try copying everything to a hard disk and add the log switch to the setup.ini.

Here is a link to the msiexec command line params: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314881/en-us

Try putting a blank between the + sign and the path to the log file:

msiexec /i websvr.msi /lew+ C:\Setup_Project.log
--------------------------------^

This is the culprit:

> Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or > package vendor.  Action ConfigureIIS, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI6C.tmp, command: +E:\ProjectCentral\

The setup tries to configure the IIS on your server machine. Verify that the IIS is running on your server. If it seems to be ok, try to remove IIS and then reinstall IIS, check its running ok.

Digging a bit I've found:

http://www.mcse.ms/archive204-2004-4-580551.html

especially:

>This is explained very well in the Project Server Guides
>for 2003, and do make sure you follow the guide's steps
>on having everything in order before installing. There's
>a lot of pieces to this project puzzle.

Mm, the link in that piece of information, takes me to a commercial site from HP about blade servers.  Don't know where I'll can find the Project Server Guides they are referring to.

About the IIS remark you made, this is all happening on a newly installed test server.  IIS got installed only this morning, no settings were made except to allow ASP and Frontpage Server extentions.

I'm not sure if a verbose log could give more insight, but here's how to generate it:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823587/en-us

Doesn't make sense to post the entire log here, maybe the last 20 to 50 lines are enough, just look where it fails.

This is not Project Server 2003, it's Project Central Server 2000 which I'm trying to install.  It is part of the compatible software list that Microsocft has on its site for Windows 2003.

Ok, I tried this procedure, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871158/en-us , but it also didn't fix the problem.  The error in that document looks a lot like the one we have here...  Damm IIS.

Do you have Windows 2003 SP1 and Project Central Server 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1)? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896367)

Seen this? http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBN/tip6900/rh6965.htm

Sorry, but then the only thing left is call Microsoft Product Support. Maybe theit internal bug database has more infos on it. If its a bug and not your "fault", its even free of charge....

Yes, both sites I've been on.  The first confirms that you can install Project Central Server 2000 on Windows 2003 SP1, unfortunately I'm having a hard time with it.

The last link I also read but there they already asume that you were able to install it.  In that document they already have the project folder in IIS, I didn't get that far.

Ok, I'll try to find their number and pray they will help me...  I'll grant you the points anyway for the time and effort you put into this issue!!  Thanks a lot for the support.

Wait until you see IIS machines that are "hardend" by some "specialists"  by denying user rights to the Guests group ... everything works fine until you need anonymous access for any reason (i.e. WSUS requires it) ... drives you nuts because its the LAST thing you think of...

Thanks for the points. If you get it solved by MS support, post their solution here, it might help others with the same problem...
