I am new to sata 2 drives and need to know if  the cable used for connecting to a sata 2 motherboard socket, is the same as the cable used to connect to a sata socket, or should i need to purchase a new cable.

They will interchange, but SATA 2 has a click lock so is the better option. SATA 1 will stop working if you breathe heavily in the same room.
