This really doesn't belong in Web Development, BUT...

Most cable modems remember what the last computer they were plugged into was.  Unplug your cable modem, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in.

After the modem is done rebooting:  Click on Start -> Run and type "ipconfig /renew" but without the quotes.

By unplug the cable modem, I mean unplug power to the cable modem.  Not unplug it from the computer.

Honestly...I don't know where exactly this would have fallen, but it's definitely not web development ;)

Glad I could help just the same.

give us setup info.. like the modem is plugged direct in the pc or plugged into a router, etc..

have you tried powercycling the router / devices? first powercycle modem - wait for 2 minutes then powercycle router then reboot pc.... this is usually good first thing to do (usually only the router is required... but all devices sometimes helps.)

Come on now...this is my sandbox ;)

More than likely his cable modem provider is like mine in that the modem will only assign an IP to one MAC address at a time and he just needs a modem reset.

Ash, that could very well be..  there are a few different types of ISP configs... there is also straight dhcp and pppoe.
