About Application Server

I don't quite understand the concept of application server, but I will be using WebSphere or weblogic soon.
Is WebSphere or WebLogic a hardware or software? If it is a software, is it tied to any proprietary hardware?

Websphere and Weblogic are Application Servers, these are softwares and are not bound to any  proprietary hardware. You can run them on your Windows machines(Other OS are also supported). You need high RAM.
An application server is software which provides a platform for application development. Unlike standalone applications, applications running on an application server are able to use advanced features made avaiable by the application server.

For example, most application servers provide the standard 'web-server' functionality to serve web pages to incoming visitors. They ill also provide the functionality to compile and run JSPs, servlets and EJBs. The application server will provide security and services to the application you build which allows you to concentrate mopre on your business logic than the 'plumbing' involved in puttin an application live on the web.

Websphere and Weblogic are example sof application servers - websphere is by IBM and weblogic by BAE Systems. Both these application server provide standard platforms that will host J2EE applications (i.e. both these servers meet the standards set by the java J2EE specification). Some application servers will also provide more services beyond that of the J2EE specification (although you ashould avoid using these extra services if possible as it means you can easily port your applications from one server environment to another).

There are many many features provided by these servers and you may get much better details in the above links.
