Small Business Server consuming too many resources.

Hello All,

I have been trying to run a REV Iomega backup on a SBS 2003 and I continue to get reports in the log file from REV software that the backup was not able to start because of low system resources.  If I stop some services the backup will perform ok.  Is this normal.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Eric

Which services are you stopping?
wileavereAuthor Commented:
I stopped CA etrust antivirus and a couple of other services, SBSMonitoring and SBSSharepoint.  They freed up enough resources to run the back up.  I don't think I should have to stop services just to run a backup.  The server has 1GB RAM.

What's taking up the RAM on the system?  Look over task manager - and tick off the "Virtual Memory" column in the processes list.

From experience, you should not use the REV's software and instead use the SBS Backup.  You will need http://www.firestreamer.com to make this work though.

Jeff,

What happened to "It's all in the box"?  I would like to use either the REV software or SBS Backup without any third party software.

Should i be running more memory?  2GB?
Or, what services can I shut down before backup begins with a batch file and then restart after the backup?

Thanks
Eric

The issue with the REV's is that the Operating System recognizes them as CDROM drives, which are prevented as a backup location.  So you need something to compensate for that.

You're the one that chose that drive... so you can either get FireStreamer or get a USB Hard drive that doesn't need any third party software.

Actually my boss picked it.  Wants me to install, configure, troubleshoot and support it, but he doesn't know anything about it either.

I will see what I can do with FireStreamer.

Thanks

Jeff,

I have another issue.  The sbs backup is not working correctly.  Under Server Management, Manage Small Business Server back, I get The page cannot be found message.  So I was going to go to add/remove programs and uninstall then restart then reinstall, but what section is backup under?  Is it under Administration, Networking, monitoring...?

Thanks again.
