Slow Print Spooling

Print spooling (apparently) slowed down suddenly on a Windows 2000 system from printing starting within seconds to now taking 15 seconds or longer for printing to start, and it doesn't matter which of three printers on the network I attempt printing to.  I've reinstalled the printer driver and software.  What can cause problems with the print spooling?

Perhaps the disk needs to be defragged? Is there low freespace on C:? Check your processes, is there anything else that has an overly high CPU load?

The Jaz cartridge is new, comes formatted.  I've checked processes, nothing overloading the CPU.  I'm starting to think the Jaz drive has failed mechanically even though the system reports it functioning.  I appreciate your input.  Thank you.
Sorry, mcc-cpa, I've replied to the wrong inquiry.  Low free space on the hard drive, spool file size, and other such things I've looked into.  No probloems there.
