pre fill input text field of html form

hello,
  I have a simple html form as below:

<form action="page1.php" method="post">
<table>
<td> <input type="text" name="username" size="20" maxlength="40" id="user"><br>
</td>
</table>
<input type="submit" value="login" name="submit">

What should I add to this code so that the input field will be filled up with some text like "username here" when this page is opened.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If you want the "username here" to go away when you click the textbox ... use this:

<script type="text/javascript">
function clearDefault(el) {
  if (el.defaultValue==el.value) el.value = ""
}
</script>

... in the body put:

<input type="text" name="username" size="20" maxlength="40" id="user" value="username here" onfocus="clearDefault(this)">

You are suppose to accept the answer that help you out, if it's the perfect answer to fix your problem you assigned a grade of A, if it's somewhat helpfull but you still had to work it out to work, than you can give a grade of B or C or even D and guess what, you can even split the point between different answer.

Damn!
