File/backup no response

I have tried to backup Outlook on the fly but...
When I click BACKUP from the File menu nothing happens, the last backup date/time doesn't change.
Only when I CLOSE Outlook do the files backup.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It you are trying to backup a pst or ost file that is use, it will work if Outlook is open.  You will need to close Outlook to perform the backup.

Greetings, mikecox_ !

Make sure Outlook has the latestt updates.  Outlook 2003 is up to service pack 3.

If no joy, you need to have Outlook close for backup to take effect.

Best wishes!

Mike,

Easiest way to update to go the Microsoft Office update site and click on the "Check for Updates" link in the left menu

That's how I got to the link I sent; after drilling down through half dozen links.  The link you just sent is one I passed through on the way to the one I posted to you.

I *think* I got to the right dl page but there are 33 options!.  I guess I could read through the maze of information but I'm still afraid I will end up confused about which option to choose; like do I dl  Full or Client?

I'm not even sure one of those is the right option.  IF I dl the top one does that bring everything up to date or do I have to dl others?

When you click "Check for Updates", Internet Explorer should automatically find the update you need.

When will I ever learn?  I use Firefox and every now and then I forget where I am!

I went to IE with your link and got a more precise option list of upgrades, but there were only 2 and they applied to a junkmail fix and some other unrelated fix.  No major Service Pack upgrade.

I also searched for general updates and got about 5l, only one had anything to do with Outlook; but Outlook Express.

After installing all the upgrades and rebooting I clicked File/backup and got the same result.

An "Outlook Personal Backup Folders" window pops up. When I click the "Save Backup" icon the window closes, but no backup occurs..  When I clicked File/Backup again the same thing happens, and the date/time of the last backup is still unchanged.

"About" shows that  I have SP2.  How do I get SP3? Do I have to dig?
