Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

from wikipedia:

Server Application Programming Interface (or SAPI) is the term used by PHP to designate direct module interfaces to web server applications such as the Apache HTTP Server, Microsoft IIS, or iPlanet. Microsoft also uses the term in ISAPI. For many servers, PHP has a direct module interface called SAPI. It is in the form of a DLL file; for example, for Apache 2.0, it is called php5apache2.dll. The DLL is a module that provides an interface between PHP and the web server, written in a form that the server understands.

So ... it is not a web programming language like CGI, but the application interface between the server side programming language (PHP) and the basic functions provided by the server.

Peace and joy.  mvan
