IE6 sp1 - Using Address bar drop down hangs browser

Two conditions are going on. If I type in the url of a website in the address bar the E icon in top right hand corner will spin and in the bottom left hand corner the word "Done" will appear but the website never appears.

If I click on the drop down arrow of the address bar to select a url the icon will immediately turn to an hourglass and the browser is frozen. In both cases the only way to exit the brower is to End Task.

Now one more strange thing. The home page is set to When I open the browser it will go to the website. If I click on a hyperlink to read a story it will perform as it's supposed to. If I go to favorites and select a url the browser will go to that website without hesitation.

I have been to the Windows Update and Office Update sections of MS. I am completely up to date.

have you tried deleting temporary internet files and history of IE?
try resetting IE options to default ones from Tools>Internet Options>Advanced section.
also, is the machine clear from malware stuff?

Last night before I went to bed I tried an automatic sweep of the registry using Reg Cleaner. I came to the computer this morning and the browser is working normally. I'm not sure what the culprit was. I'm just glad it's working as it is my wife's computer. I was getting an earful! :) Thanks for your tips above.
