Perimeter router> is dynamic routing necessary

The router in question is a Cisco 1721. On a basic perimeter router is it better to have a dynamic routing protocol enabled or simply enter static routes? Does enabling NAT on the device configure the necessary routes?

Well that depends on many things. What is the size of your network? How many routers? When you say "perimeter router" are you referring to your internet router?

If you have a firewall between your perimeter router and internal network, there is no need for a routing protocol and you probably shouldn't use one. Static routes are fine; and you should only need one (maybe two).

the config is like this

              internet <--------->router<-------->Lan

this is in a broadband scenario and the router is also a NAT device.
the only firewall is the routers ACL's

Then I'm afraid I don't understand the question. If you're using a broadband connection, and you only have one router in your organization, you have absolutely zero reason to use a Routing protocol.

Think about it; if you configured a Routing protocol on that router, what exactly would it exchange routing updates with?

You can not use a Routing protocol under these circumstances, and you wouldn't want to anyway.
