Automatically updating software

Hello experts, I am curious about updating software installed on a client computer without uninstalling and then re-installing the newer version.  For example, windows has windows update, quickbooks has the 'quickbook update agent' and so on.  These applications automatically check for updates and download them in the background.  when everything is ready to go, they install on shutdown or when the user tells it to.

How do applications do this? Is it hard/time consuming? I am especially interested in how to do this in C# (2.0).  If you could point me in the right direction for this, I would greatly appreciate it.
