Word or Excel will freeze when clicking on Save As

I have a client with a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Pro, 512mb ram and Office 2003 SBE.  Everytime you click on "Save As"  in Word or Excel, they will freeze and then an error report is sent and nothing comes back on the error report.  "Save"  works fine.  I have updated Office 2003 online with the latest service packs.  I have removed and reinstalled Office and I also ran the Microsoft Installer clean up tool and then reinstalled and updated, I have tried creating a new user and I still get the freezing problem.  I have also tested the ram with MemCheck 86.  Any ideas?

Greetings, mtk4590 !

1. Reset the Outlook toolbar template. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename outcmd.dat file. Restart Outlook and a fresh outcmd.dat file will be recreated.

2Check if a program is intefering with Outlook. Disable antivirus, antispyware, Norton programs, and any other programs running in background.

3. Disable Outlook Addins.  Go to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Addin Manager or COMM/Addins and disable the addins.

4. Start Outlook in Safe Mode.  Go to Start > Run and type

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" /safe

Your path to Outlook.exe may be a little different.

Best wishes!
Delete all file links in Start, documents, delete the hsitory list of opened files in word and excel's list of recent files, remove all shares to remote drives on other systems, and open only files off the local hard disk for 10-20 times and the problem should cure itself.  Never edit files with these apps from a floppy disk or a remote disk.

Hi War1, thanks for the reply but just wondering if your answer relates to the question and if so, how?
Thanks,
Mike
mtk4590,

You have an MS Office program, not just an Outlook problem.  Here is a clarification.

1. Word close, do a search for and rename normal.dot file. Restart Word and a fresh normal.dot file will be recreated.

2Check if a program is intefering with MS Office. Disable antivirus, antispyware, Norton programs, and any other programs running in background.

3. Outlook addins will affect all of MS Office. Disable Outlook Addins.  Go to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Addin Manager or COMM/Addins and disable the addins.

search for normal.dot and delete it.

see if that helps
looks like the security update is the culprit here affecting office programs and internet explorer which i experienced myself :)

the solution in the lb above solves the problem, looks like MS made a small blunder in trying to protect us

Thanks bruintje, for getting the correct answer to me.  That Microsoft reg edit did the trick.
Thanks to all who responded.
