How To Extend Flash Combobox?

I'm fairly new to Flash, so I'll need my hand held so to speak.  I'm tring to extend the combo box component built in to flash.  The issue I'm having is that I don't really know what to do.  I've been trying to follow some tutorials online, but I haven't made much progress.  I'm working in Flash 8.  I've made a actionscript class that extends the combobox.  I'm able to make an instance of the calss in a fla but I can't see it.  I think I need to link it to visual representation, but I don't know how.  I just want to have it look exactly like the built in combobox, but with some added functionality. Help?

Thanks,

what is the added functionality you're looking to incorporate? That will give us an actual start.

First to address Dushan911; I know how to use the combobox, I want to be able to extend it's functionality.

Iammontoya, at this point I don't really have a particular piece of functionality I want to add, but more of how would I extend a component in general.  It's a skill I invision being useful down the road as I undertake a Flash project.

I've figured it out myself with the help of this website: http://www.person13.com/articles/components/creatingcomponents.html

I'm going to ask for my points to be refunded unless there is an objection.  Thank you both for your willingness to help.
