Shouldn't you actually write it yourself? If I was an employer looking for a developer, I'd like to think that students coming out of a college has some experience actually writing software, not just copying somebody's work...

If you want an unique project, you'll need to write it yourself in any case... Once it's on the internet, it doesn't stay unique for long...
You do not need an unique project I think. It's even better to start with something common.
If you can apply enough working changes in a common project so it become to look unique then you've done a good job especially for a beginner.
