Mailman gives strange From message and adds strange attachment to emails sent to a list - please help

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting Mailman 2.1.5 to do a simple task. Effectively I am trying to use it to send an email to 3000 email addresses. Currently I have put in a list of 5 test email addresses.

When I send an email to the list server, each email that is sent is not ideal in two ways.

Firstly, in Microsoft Outlook when an email is received, in the From: box it says the following -

From: mosesmuststay-bounces@mosesmuststay.org.uk on behalf of support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

I have no idea where this mosesmuststay-bounces email address is coming from, I just want it to say

From: support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

Secondly, when an email is received, each email has an attachment (e.g. ATT00227.txt) which is (clearly) a text file that reads

**
Mosesmuststay mailing list
Mosesmuststay@mosesmuststay.org.uk
http://lists.mosesmuststay.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/mosesmuststay
**

I don't want this to appear. I just want to use Mailman to send to 3000 email addresses, and don't want to use it as a subscribe/unsubscribe mailing list.

Please can you help me with these two points. I don't fully understand Mailman, it seems quite 'deep' and just want to use it in its most basic form.

I look forward to you help.

Thankyou
James

OK - I've got  your second question solved. The attachement which has the:

**
Mosesmuststay mailing list
Mosesmuststay@mosesmuststay.org.uk
http://lists.mosesmuststay.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/mosesmuststay
**

in it is due to the way that Outlook handles MIME messages. In order to remove it, edit the:

DEFAULT_MSG_FOOTER =

You will probably need to alter the number of " pairs in order to prevent an attachment appearing in Outlook. The number of pairs needs to be configured to match the specified list email which may be awkward. The default works, for all variations that I've managed to try.

Sorry - that configuration value is in the:

$prefix/Mailman/Defaults.py

file which is included in totality in the configuration as a result of the:

from Defaults import *

line in the:

$prefix/Mailman/mm_cfg.py

file.

OK - Got your first question understood.

From: mosesmuststay-bounces@mosesmuststay.org.uk on behalf of support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

is used as the from line in order to ensure that 'bounced' email from a poor quality list does not overwhelm a person posting on the list. Imagine that you had 500,000 email addresses in a list, and 200,000 bounced your list email. Unless you have the special email list mosesmuststay-bounces@mosesmuststay.org.uk email address to process these bounced emails, then the list would be unusable!.......are you really sure you want to change this?? If you do????Why???, then the relavent bit that you need to overide from the Default.py file (so you enter it in the mm_cfg.py file) is:

---------------X8---------------------
# The envelope sender will be mylist-bounces+aperson=a.nother.dom@dom.ain
#
# Note that your MTA /must/ be configured to deliver such an addressed message
# to mylist-bounces!
VERP_FORMAT = '%(bounces)s+%(mailbox)s=%(host)s'
---------------X8---------------------

Bear in mind that there are a whole load of bounce responses that relate to management and monitoring of your mail-list, so changing this this is NOT recommended!

Also note that my comment above relating to matching pairs is wrong. Apparently 2 x " means that the text following is multi-line....Obviously I am not a python programmer!

Also my original suggestion to edit the Default.py file IS NOT recommended (but it works) :) . Add the value to the mm_cfg.py file, which will then overide any settings in the Default.py.

Thankyou for your reply... your almost at 500 points!

The reason why I wanted to change it is the when a recipient receives the email, it doesn't look very neat, it makes the (legitimate) email look more like a spam as it reads

From: mosesmuststay-bounces@mosesmuststay.org.uk on behalf of support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

and not

From: support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

Also, a recipient of the email may think of replying to mosesmuststay-bounces@mosesmuststay.org.uk which isn't a legitimate email address. Is there any way to keep the funcitonality but allow the From: to read just

support@mosesmuststay.org.uk

?

Thanks

... continued, essentially I just want to send 3000 tidy emails using this program without any of the 'list' functionality.. as I won't be allowing people to post to it.

Thanks...

I believe that the Setting you need to change is this one:

# Mailman can be configured to "munge" Reply-To: headers for any passing
# messages.  One the one hand, there are a lot of good reasons not to munge
# Reply-To: but on the other, people really seem to want this feature.  See
# the help for reply_goes_to_list in the web UI for links discussing the
# issue.
# 0 - Reply-To: not munged
# 1 - Reply-To: set back to the list
# 2 - Reply-To: set to an explicit value (reply_to_address)
DEFAULT_REPLY_GOES_TO_LIST = 2

#The default is 0 which gives the effect that you see above.

HTH:)
