I am wondering about the need for an optical drive or floppy in a domain workstation. I am about to purchase a dozen replacement workstations for our domain, and the users have no need for such drives. It's better if they don't have them. Normally, when it is necessary, I just load any needed software on the server and run it from there.
On those rare occasions when a HDD needs to be replaced, how can I load the OS without a floppy or CD drive to boot from? Is it possible to format the the new HDD while attached to another machine, and load the necessary install files from the OS CD, so that once the new HDD is installed the install can be started directly from the HDD? Or is there some other strategy that can be used to install the OS when no CD or floppy is present?
