Detect Label Overflow

Is there a way to directly detect whether the text in a label has "overflowed" the size of the label?  If not for labels, for some other text display control?

My current approach is to get the text width, and then estimate from that whether overflow has occurred...but I realized I hadn't asked whether overflow could be detected directly as a property of some text display control (though I didn't find any readily obvious evidence in Google that it can...)

Thanks for input.   I'll troll a little longer, though I expect that's right.
