MS Office apps not responding Clicking "Look In" in Open Dialog Box

MS Office 2000 and MS Office 2003 installed on 2 seperate machines both running XP Pro SP2 - have started having the same problem when clicking on the
"Look In" drop down in Open Dialog box on every single app including Word, Excel, PP, etc. Have downloaded and installed latest Office updates, re-installed
latest print and video drivers and re-installed Office.  Also deleted in desperation but cannot resolve problem. No problems opening documents
outside of apps.  These applications worked for well over the last year on these machines - Newer Gateways with 1GByte ram.  I am at a total loss.
Who is Participating?
Hello lalgarin,

this could be due to the latest security update from microsoft you can check this kb for explanation and fix

You can also try this (which is a quick way of doing what MS suggest):
Copy the following to the clipboard (it's all one line even if wrapped in your browser - paste into notepad and remove line breaks if necessary, and copy again)
Click Start, run
Paste into the dialogue box and hit return.

==Copy below here==
REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached" /v "{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401" /t REG_DWORD /d 1
=Copy above here==

hope this helps a bit

Hello Bruintje,

Your fix was right on the money.  Problem resolved.  After spending all day yesterday just trying to find this problem posted anywhere and
attempting all kinds of fixes including re-install this fix was the only one that pinpointed the problem and solution.  I definately got my moneys worth
in Experts-Exchange today. To bad Microsoft  makes these fixes necessary and imposible to find.

Thanks again,

glad it worked, this question is a hot issue on EE at this moment in the Office and Application TA's

hopefully we can help you in the future again

thanks for the grade :)
