AD Replication Error Event ID 1083

Hi,

I have two DC's, one running Exchange and the other RAS. I am getting NTDS Replication errors on the RAS server. When these errors occur on RAS server, MSFTPSVC errors occur on the Exchange server at the same time. Also, up to a week ago I was getting Browser error on the Exchange server but then it stopped. I made no change to make it stop.

I learned even though the RAS server has one nic, it has to transport adapters. One for DC and the other for RAS. This is was the intial problem which led to Computer Browser error. The RAS transport adapter was taking the backup role and the other DC kept failing on the retrieving the backup lit too many times.

I have dont netdiag and nltest on RAS DC. It skipped the trust relationship test in netdiag. NLTEST failed on /sc-verify:domain. Came back with I_NetlogonControl failed : status - 1355 0x54b ERROR_NO_SUCH_DOMAIN. I have tried the shortname as well as the full doamin name. NLTEST /dsgetdc:domain /gc came back with DC name of server and one of the RAS DHCP assigned IP's rather than the static ip configured on the single nic.

can you verify the trusts you have set up for me?

Everything in dcdiag passed for RAS server. The Exchange server has a passed the trust relationship test to Ras server but Ras server to Exchange server has not passed. I am looking into this other article of your and will let you know this evening as I have to leave for a class right now. Thanx Jay Jay 70.

Jay Jay70 - I have read the article and added the ports to my Sonicwall TZ170 (lan to lan). However, I ran replmon, added both servers to monitor list. Checked trust relationship on both servers and they state no trust relationship. I don't understand this....

Stafi - I called MS and got that hot fix. Trying it now.

I recently put both servers into native mode (server 2003 versus pre-2000; didn't reboot yet) and rebuilt DNS one at a time (due computer browser errors).

Stafi - The hotfix is included in the service pack one of Server 2003 which is already installed. Any other thoughts....

On both servers, make sure that the real NIC that is attached to the LAN is at the top of the binding order.  If you need to change this, reboot the server afterwards.

Netman66- I don't understand. Where do I check the binding order? How do it put it at the top if needed?

When I do ipconfig on RAS server it comes back with RAS ip first then DC (physical nic) ip second. The second nic on Exchange server is disaled. How do I change the binding here on the RAS server?

Netman66Commented:
Right-Click My Network Places and select Properties.
Go to the menu Advanced, then Advanced Settings.
In the Connections pane move the NIC to the top using the arrows to the right of the pane.

Reboot the server.

Netman66- Sorry, went out for dinner. I took a look at RAS server, it has the nic on the top but the Exchange server had the disabled nic on top (LAN 2) then currently used nic on second (LAN1). I switched that order around. Rebooted Exchange server which I changed. It's rebooting right, I will let you know.

After the reboot, it seems to working fine. I had one error, DCOM service failed related to ExchangeIS. I fixed it and restarted Exchange services. No error after restart. I did sync up the directory partitions on both servers with no errors using REPLMON. So I guess I should wait till morning to see if this error shows up again. I will update again in 12 hours.

I wanted to update this thread. I have not seen the replication error this morning on either server. The NIC binding seems to have fixed it. Thank you everyone for your help.
