I have just brought a server on line.  It is W2K3 SBE.  Some of the things like sharepoint, My SQL, DNS, DHCP, etc I don't want to run inthe services.  The one's I don't know how to uninstall are MySql and Sharepoint.  I'm pretty sure that using this just as a file server I don't even need these running.  Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

You can't.  And you probably should have researched that before buying it.

SBS is specialized product that must be installed as the CENTRAL point of your network.  It MUST be the domain controller that holds all of the FSMO roles.  You cannot just use it as a file server.

If I don't install Exchange and it is the first server on my network then yes I can use it as just a file server until I want to domain my network, right?  Once complete changed from peer to peer we will join the computers but for now I'm just looking to minimize what is running on the machine.  And right now I don't need some of these services running.  I've noticed that when I stop wins and DNS I begin getting all of these sharepoint errors.  Sorry I wasn't more clear to begin with.

No, you cannot install SBS without Active Directory AND DNS.  Furthermore, if you don't install Exchange you cannot apply SBS Service Packs.  SBS has a very specific role to play, and unlike standard Server 2003 machines, you cannot just make it into something else.

I would suspect that you bought the server because of the price point of SBS... It's less expensive than Standard Server 2003 because of it's specific role.  If you don't want it for that you should return it.

Never said anything about Active directory, I said DNS and WINS.  However knowing this now I've noticed that in the past I have had to let the SBS take care of the DHCP and DNS/WINS or nothing worked well.  Good to know now.  I sent you an email at your sbs account also.

Most of the confusion has been from me using incorrect terms.  Thanks for the info.

One term I would like to point out to you is SBS.  Just to be clear, SBS is NOT an EDITION of Windows Server 2003 (which is why it isn't called SBE).

SBS is a unified server technology that integrates Server 2003, Exchange 2003, IIS 6.0, Active Directory, SQL Server 2005 (premium edition), and ISA Server 2004 (premium edition).  There is a CORE service which SBS runs in order to accomplish this.

Understanding this concept will help you learn even more about SBS.  :-)
