Palm does not HotSync after Windows update, Sync software states com1 not available

I recently did the automatic upgrades to a Windows XP Pro machine.  Since then, I have not been able to HotSync my Palm Pilot (Tungsten T2).  I re-installed the Palm software and selected USB port as my connection.  When I put the Palm in the cradle, Windows "finds" the Palm and states that the hardware is ready to be used.  When I try to Hot Sync, the Palm tries to connect to the computer and then I get an error on the Palm stating:  The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop cound not be established.  Please check your setup and try again.

When I look at the setup in the Palm software, it states that Com1 is not available.

I am unable to remove the Windows update that I downloaded earlier this month - it is just not an option.

Uninstall hotsync.

reboot computer

then re-install hotsync

Uninstalling and re-installing the program did not work.

I've tried practically all of the USB ports available on the computer.  The Palm cradle only has a USB port.

I know that the USB port works because (1) when I plug the Palm in the computer recognizes the new hardware and (2) I plugged in a digital camera and had no problem accessing the photos.

If you install on another PC does the same thing happen?

you could also try this:

Download and install from Palm's Site the latest Desktop Software 4.1.4

You first need to perform a full uninstall of the application and anything associated with it (intellysynch, chapura, etc).

If you are familiar with using the registry, search for any instance of the User name on your palm device (you can find this on your hotsynch display on the palm) If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then dont touch it.

Go to the C drive and look for the folder where the palm is installed (it usually defaults to program files/Palm (or palmone). ) and back up the folder with the same user name (put it on a USB key or cd), once done, delete the entire palm folder.

I find it good to do a reboot to clear up resources and then download the new desktop software. This should hopefully work.
