I am having a problem changing the color depth and resolution on a dell dimension 2400 with the Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller.  I have had this problem in the past and ended up reformatting and reinstalling windows to correct the problem after trying numerous driver uninstalls/installs.  This issue seems to occur somewhat out of the blue, I do not see any errors or warnings related to this problem in the event logs.  However, I suspect that it relates to a Windows update that is being installed automatically.  Suspecting this, I went in and tried to use the system restore feature but it would never complete successfully (go figure), I then tried uninstalling all of the latest windows updates that were applied to the machine but did not have any luck their either.  I do not wish to reformat and reinstall windows again to fix a  problem that will most reoccur and that should be able to be remedied much more quickly.

Download and update the BIOS firmware for your Dell Dimension 2400

including the chipset drivers.

I followed your instructions in the given order but had no success.  I plan on buying a PCI graphics card tomorrow evening to stick in the machine due to the time constraint.  Let me know if you come up with anything else in the meantime.  Your help does not go unappreciated!
